Common Eye Emergencies

We’ve seen a lot of eye issues in our careers, but these are the eye injuries we see most often.

Note: If the problem you’re experiencing isn’t listed below, that doesn’t mean it is not an emergency. If you’re unsure whether it’s an emergency or not, contact us. We’re dedicated to safeguarding your vision.

Eye tissue is very delicate, meaning harsh chemicals like cleaning fluids could cause serious damage. If you accidentally splash chemicals in your eye, it’s crucial that you flush it out with clean, cool water as soon as possible to minimise the damage. Although your eye may feel better after a minute or two, you need to keep flushing it out for at least 15 minutes. Once you’ve finished, seek medical attention right away.

When something cuts, tears, or scratches the tissue of your cornea, it’s called a corneal abrasion. Even small or shallow abrasions can be serious, as they can leave your eye vulnerable to infection. If you experience a corneal abrasion, cover your eye if possible to prevent further damage and avoid rubbing it while you wait for medical help.

When something like an eyelash or a speck of dust gets in your eye, it’s really tempting to rub it. You must fight this instinct, as rubbing your eye could cause a corneal abrasion, or even embed the object in your eye tissue. You can try to get the object out yourself by wetting a clean cotton swab and gently tapping the object. If the object doesn’t stick to the cotton swab, try flushing your eye out with clean, cool water for a few minutes. If the water doesn’t wash the object out, you’ll need to get medical help.
