ZEST for Dry Eye and Demodex

Demodex Blepharitis is a chronic inflammatory condition of the eyelids caused by Demodex mites, particularly Demodex folliculorum and Demodex brevis. These microscopic parasites reside in hair follicles and sebaceous glands, especially around the eyelashes and meibomian glands. Their presence can lead to:

  • Itchy, burning, or gritty eyes
  • Red, swollen eyelid margins
  • Cylindrical dandruff at the base of eyelashes (a hallmark sign)
  • Chronic eye irritation, often mistaken for dry eye or bacterial blepharitis

Over time, untreated Demodex infestation can worsen eyelid inflammation, disrupt tear film stability, and exacerbate ocular surface disease.

ZEST (Zocular Eyelid System Treatment)

ZEST is a professional in-office treatment designed specifically to manage Demodex blepharitis and other forms of eyelid inflammation. It uses a formulation containing Zokrex, a natural okra-based compound with anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. The ZEST procedure is:

  • Non-invasive and fast – typically completed in under 15 minutes
  • Comfortable – patients often report a refreshing or cooling sensation
  • Effective – targets Demodex mites, debris, and biofilm buildup

How ZEST Works:

  1. The clinician applies a proprietary gel containing okra extract to a cotton-tipped applicator.
  2. The gel is massaged along the eyelid margins and lashes, loosening debris and killing Demodex mites.
  3. After several minutes, the eyelids are rinsed, leaving the lid margins clean and refreshed.

Benefits of ZEST Treatment:

  • Reduces Demodex population
  • Alleviates symptoms like itchiness and inflammation
  • Improves eyelid hygiene and tear film stability
  • Can be repeated periodically for maintenance

This can be a stand alone in clinic treatment with at home maintenance but in some cases having a ZEST treatment before Intense Pulsed Light or Radiofrequency treatment is needed.”
